Nothing does more to deny democracy than gerrymandering—the process by which legislators draw districts that are so heavily weighted toward one party that election results are preordained. When whole states are gerrymandered, the will of the voters can and is thwarted—so that even if most voters cast their ballots for Democrats, Republicans might retain control of legislative chambers. Gerrymandering is such a powerful tool for protecting incumbent politicians and parties—it is literally referred to as “representatives picking their voters rather than voters picking their representatives”—that in heavily gerrymandered states, many seats go uncontested in November elections. To the extent that there is competitive, it is often in primaries, with a narrow minority of ideological absolutists threatening incumbent who works across party lines. Thus, gerrymandering has the duo effect of reducing partisan competition while increasing partisan gridlock."

http://www.thenation.com/article/if-ohio-bans-gerrymandering-today-there-could-be-hope-for-american-democracy/
Bud Meyershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02065020063363023395noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7895164153505105997.post-80831459047322511432015-11-02T19:41:12.477-08:002015-11-02T19:41:12.477-08:00On Monday night (November 2, 2015) Lawrence Lessig...On Monday night (November 2, 2015) Lawrence Lessig, the Professor of Law at Harvard Law School who was running for president in the Democratic primary, went on The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell (with Alex Wagner hosting that night) and made a very good case why we need publicly financed elections to get a more representative form of government. He also exposes how the DNC chairwoman (Debbie Wasserman Schultz) rigged the debates by changing the rules to keep insurgents such as himself from participating. At the 2015 Jefferson-Jackson Dinner Democratic Dinner in Iowa, it appears that organizers deliberately tried to keep Bernie Sanders' supporters out. Great article. Ironically, Clinton waited almost three weeks to address Ferguson, once used a 3 AM ad in 2008 that had a racist sub-message, and today accepts money from prison lobbyists. This speaks volumes.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/h-a-goodman/democrats-bernie-sanders-defeat-moderate-hillary-clinton_b_8449748.html

Huffington Post (Oct 2015)

Hillary Clinton Says She'll End Private Prisons, Stop Accepting Their Money: Her campaign says she wants to end the era of mass incarceration.

"Lobbying firms that work for two major private prison giants, GEO Group and Corrections Corporation of America, gave $133,246 to the Ready for Hillary PAC, according to Vice. Those companies operate a number of criminal and immigrant detention facilities, some of which have been plagued by allegations of abuse and poor treatment of detainees. Immigrant and civil rights groups have urged Clinton to stop accepting contributions from donors with ties to GEO and CCA. Earlier Thursday, in announcing its co-founder Cesar Vargas was moving to the campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the advocacy group Dream Action Coalition singled out Clinton for accepting those contributions. Sanders recently introduced a bill to ban government contracts for private prisons, including immigrant detention centers.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/hillary-clinton-private-prisons_562a3e3ee4b0ec0a389418ec
Bud Meyershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02065020063363023395noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7895164153505105997.post-66554242379562955552015-11-02T11:45:35.105-08:002015-11-02T11:45:35.105-08:00Our rich have become so rich that they’re dominati...Our rich have become so rich that they’re dominating our democracy as never before. Currently she leads Bernie Sanders 61 percent to 13 percent among non-white Democratic voters.

But there are black voters who are unequivocal in their dislike of the Clintons’ politics. Some activists note that Bill Clinton signed into law tough anti-crime measures that led to over-policing in communities of color and mandatory sentencing that inflated incarceration rates.

And some African Americans have not forgiven the couple for statements they made in 2008 during Hillary Clinton’s primary battle with Obama, that were racially insensitive and seemed to suggest black voters owed a political debt to the Clintons.
Bud Meyershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02065020063363023395noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7895164153505105997.post-4715745303732310662015-11-02T09:45:45.703-08:002015-11-02T09:45:45.703-08:00
